Laser hair removal: the principles

At Epilia, you will be offered the first consultation before you start your final hair removal. It aims to inform you about all aspects related to the laser, to give you the treatment protocol and to provide you with all the necessary recommendations for the smooth running of your permanent laser hair removal sessions.

INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE EACH SESSION

  • No exposure to the sun or sunbed in the 4 to 6 weeks preceding the session.
  • Tanning activators and self-tanning lotions are also prohibited.
  • Please inform our staff of any drug treatment.
  • The hair in the area of your laser hair removal should not be discoloured or waxed (no wax, electric hair removal epilator, tweezers, depilatory cream) in the 4 weeks before the treatment. The hair on the treated area should be shaved 24 to 48 hours before the session (except for women’s face).
  • The skin must be free from any cosmetic product.
  • The use of new, unwashed clothing should also be avoided if it comes in contact with the treated area.

Unlike a pulsed light treatment, permanent laser hair removal is safe and effective if performed by a professional and specialised team. In our Epilia centres, we have the necessary skills and a medical technical platform from the last generation to ensure you will be treated with optimal care.

Contraindications are limited but must be respected for a safe and effective laser treatment:

  • No exposure to UV or other rays in the 4 to 6 weeks preceding the session (sun, sunbed, self-tanner, tanning activator).
  • No treatment on a pregnant woman can be considered.
  • A body area affected by inflammation at an infectious stage cannot be treated.
  • Tattooed areas (or with permanent make-up) cannot be treated. The treatment can only be done around the tattooed area, which will still be hairy.

Depending on the areas treated and the sensitivity of each, permanent laser hair removal can be more or less unpleasant. However, the pain ensuing from the treatment is generally completely bearable. The sensation felt is similar to that of a rubber band on the skin.

To make your sessions as comfortable as possible, all our permanent laser hair removal centres are equipped with an additional machine. The latter is from the latest generation and makes the skin to cool down in the treated with an anaesthetic effect. It makes the tingling sensation caused by the laser easy to tolerate.

Permanent laser hair removal has been practised worldwide since 1995. Since then, many scientific studies were carried out. Today, we have sufficient hindsight to state with certainty that the laser has no impact on health. Because the laser targets the melanin, the surrounding tissues cannot be affected by the light beam. Moreover, its wavelength is very selective and does not go over the dermis.

Laser hair removal must be considered as an investment that becomes profitable in the long term.
Conventional hair removal sessions seem less expensive but must take place regularly for many years.
Comparative studies have shown that permanent laser hair removal is, in the end, less expensive in the long term than conventional monthly hair removal sessions.
As the treatment progresses, thanks to the time necessary between the sessions, the costs will be spread.
At the end of the treatment, you will enjoy a real comfort and peace of mind, you will save time and, above all, you will get self-confidence… And that is priceless!

Permanent laser hair removal can be performed on underage people with the agreement and signature of the quote by one of the parents. The presence of the latter is also required during the first consultation.

The hair’s life cycle consists of three phases. The laser only has an impact on hairs that are in the active growth phase (anagen phase). During the resting phase (catagen phase) and the ejection of the hair (telogen phase), the hair is no longer bound to its hair follicle. The laser, therefore, does not affect these last two phases.

Thus, it is estimated that about 15-20% of hair is destroyed at each laser hair removal session.

Since not all the hairs in the treated area are in the active phase at the same time, it is necessary to schedule several sessions to obtain an optimal result.

The number of laser hair removal sessions varies according to different factors:

  • The age
  • The sex
  • The skin phototype
  • The pigmentation and hair structure
  • The treated area

Since the physiology of each person is taken into consideration, it is impossible to accurately predict in advance the number of sessions that will be required to achieve the expected result.

Depending on the situation, but also on everyone’s expectations, it may be considered to do a yearly laser session to maintain an optimal result. However, it is not systematic.

During your first free consultation, our teams of specialists study the feasibility of the treatment and take the time to inform you about all aspects of the laser and protocol.

During this meeting, a personalised quote is drawn up and given to you in person.

The results of permanent laser hair removal are impressive and very satisfactory in most cases. This technique, although recognised as the most effective one, does not allow total hair removal. However, the remaining hair will be thinner, sparse and with no pigment.

Finally, it should be noted that laser hair removal cannot prevent the appearance of new hair bulbs linked to hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, hormonal imbalance). In these cases, sessions to maintain the results will need to be scheduled.

Laser hair removal can be performed on all body areas except on the periocular region (eyebrows and between the eyebrows).

The Alexandrite laser is THE reference regarding hair removal for light to medium skin phototypes. For matt skin phototypes, the Nd Yag laser is more suitable.

So far, Epilia centres are only equipped with Alexandrite lasers. If your skin phototype does not allow us to give you an optimal treatment, we will refer you to another centre, more adapted to your needs.

Good to know: the laser targets the hair pigment, so it has no impact on hair with no pigment (blond vellus hair, white hair and some red hair).

During the first free consultation, a diagnosis will be made regarding the feasibility of the treatment.

Permanent laser hair removal gives excellent results on areas with ingrown hairs. Indeed, as the hair is gradually destroyed, they will naturally disappear over the sessions.

The different types of lasers and depilation

All our Epilia centres are equipped with Alexandrite lasers from the Candela brand. Candela is currently the world leader in the field of lasers used for dermatological and aesthetic purposes. All the scientific studies that have been carried out to this date show that the Alexandrite laser is the most effective one on light to medium skin phototypes. Click here for more info.

Pulsed light and laser hair removal are often confused although they are two very different hair removal methods, both in terms of safety and effectiveness. The power of pulsed light is lower and it only causes the weakening of the hair follicle. For this reason, it offers an ephemeral and transient result.

On the other hand, the laser emits a more intense and selective beam of light that destroys the hair bulb and allows you to benefit from a truly permanent hair removal.

Epilia has chosen to get lasers based on the latest technology: the Alexandrite lasers of the Candela brand. This type of laser is highly efficient and guarantees your permanent hair removal is done under the best safety conditions.

The sessions

  • You must wear protective glasses at each permanent hair removal session. They will be provided by our teams of specialists at the Epilia centres.
  • Just after the session, redness and slight edema may appear but will phase out very quickly.
  • Our laser practitioners will give you a moisturising cream to apply directly after the session.
  • It is better not to expose the treated area to the sun during the week following your session (unless applying a sunblock).
  • The ejection of the hair bulb takes place within 2 weeks after the session and can be helped by light scrubs.
  • Hydration of the treated area is required for 3 days after the session.
The duration of a session depends directly on the size of the areas to be treated. Do not hesitate to contact our desk to find out the estimated time of your treatment.

It is required to shave 24 to 48 hours before any session. The impact of the laser when the hair is too long is less effective. However, to shave on the same day can be accepted with no problem as it does not interfere with the laser’s action. Shaving too close makes the procedure more complex for the practitioner who lacks points of reference.

Our teams of permanent laser hair removal specialists recommend waiting for about 4 to 6 weeks between 2 hair removal sessions (depending on the area). As the sessions progress, and depending on how well the treatment is working, this period is extended. From the first session onwards, the results are clearly visible. During the treatment, the growth of the remaining hairs is slowed down and they become sparse and thinner. To comply with the protocol is essential to optimise results.

Our teams of specialists are available to answer all the questions you may have all over the process of your permanent hair removal. They advise and support you in each of your laser sessions.

The different hair removal areas

Woman

Laser hair removal on the underarms is frequently requested by our patients. Treating this area gives excellent results because the hair is dark and thick. You will quickly obtain smooth and hairless underarms.

As with all other areas, the laser will remove hair during the growth phase. As not all of them being in this same phase at the same time, it will be necessary to perform several laser sessions.

During your first appointment, our experts at Epilia Laser Centers will explain in detail the laser protocol best suited to your hair type. The hair in the area should be shaved before the session. The underarms being a small area, the session will only last a few minutes.

Moreover, being generally little exposed to the sun, underarms are an area that can be treated all year round.

Permanent laser hair removal allows results to be obtained quickly, effectively and almost without pain.

The face is a constantly exposed area that needs to look clean and flawless every day. Unsightly facial hair is often a complex for women. Laser hair removal is THE unbeatable solution to permanently get rid of your facial hair.

Laser hair removal of the bikini line makes possible to definitively get rid of the burden of traditional hair removal in this area. Indeed, whether by shaving, which is generally irritating, or waxing, which is painful and needs to be repeated every month, the depilation of the bikini line is a source of constraints and imperfections. Permanent laser hair removal is THE solution to achieve smooth skin and get rid of unsightly hair, pimples and ingrown hairs!

During your first session, you will determine the shape of the bikini you want to obtain.

There are 3 types of bikini:

  • Classic: Bikini 1: 2 cm beyond the underwear

To treat this type of bikini, you keep your underwear and the assistant will laser the hair that extends beyond it. Only the hair present in the groin area will be treated. Pubic hair will therefore not be treated by the laser.

  • Notched: Bikini 2: tracing of your choice, without passing on the outer lips

To treat this type of bikini, your laser assistant at Epilia Laser Centers will ask you to remove your underwear. You will determine the area of hair you don’t want to treat. The hair will therefore be eradicated from the groin area and part of the pubic area. About 48 hours before each session, you need to shave the area treat by the laser.

  • Full: Bikini 3: tracing of your choice, passing on the outer lips

The permanent depilation of this type of bikini consists in permanently removing all pubic hair as well as the labia. It is important to note that on the area of the labia majora, the hair being thinner and the skin often darker, there may remain a down at the end of the laser protocol.

Man

For men, the regular use of a razor or trimmer on the face often causes irritation, pimples or ingrown hair. Whether for therapeutic purposes, to solve problems or simply for aesthetic comfort, permanent laser removal on this area is THE safest and effectiveness solution.

We depilate the contours of the beard on the cheekbones and neck to perfectly define and trim your beard. You will obtain a smooth and non-irritating beard shape. This will make your face look perfect and clearer.

It is necessary to shave the area about 24 hours before the laser session. After the session, the assistant will apply a moisturizer to reduce the feeling of heat. Your skin will be slightly red after the treatment but you can resume normal activity immediately after the session.

More and more men are considering laser hair removal on the back. As this area is not easily accessible for shaving and waxing sessions are painful and fastidious, permanent hair removal is THE solution to get rid of unsightly hair in this area.

In our Epilia laser centers, our teams have a cutting-edge technical equipment that allows faster treatment for large areas such as the back.

Thanks to the cooling system using pulsed cold air, the permanent laser hair removal treatment of the back is less painful.

During the first consultation, the assistant will examine your hair to determine the most appropriate laser protocol.

The laser will remove the thickest hair but it is important to remember that men have denser hair, so we will never be able to remove all the hair. At the end of the session, the remaining hair will be finer and more scattered. Please note that it is important not to come tanned during your laser sessions. As with other areas, it is necessary to shave the area about 24 hours before the treatment.

After the session, the assistant will moisturizer the treated area to soothe the feeling of heat. You will be able to resume normal activity immediately after the session.

Permanent laser hair removal is a major interest for men who are becoming more and more concerned about how they look. Laser hair removal of the torso and abdomen is therefore more and more requested in our Epilia laser centres.

Whether it is because of abundant hair, for sporting reasons or simply for aesthetic reasons, permanent laser removal is THE solution to remove your hair on these areas. We can distinguish the torso, which is the area at the top of the pectoral muscles, from the abdomen.

Thanks to our cutting-edge technical equipment, you can expect effective and painless hair removal on your chest and abdomen in your Epilia laser centres. Our teams of laser assistants perform laser hair removal exclusively and guarantee to treat you in optimal safe and hygiene conditions.

In addition to the Alexandrite laser, your Epilia laser centers are equipped with a pulsed cold air device. During the session, this cooling system makes the treatment less painful by cooling the skin.

Following your session, your assistant will apply a moisturizer to the treated area to reduce the feeling of heat. The skin may be red for a few hours but not painful and you can resume normal activity as soon as your session is over.
