Purpose and guidelines

Laser hair removal : the principles

courbe-20
The recommendations

At Epilia, you will be offered the first consultation before you start your final hair removal. It aims to inform you about all aspects related to the laser, to give you the treatment protocol and to provide you with all the necessary recommendations for the smooth running of your permanent laser hair removal sessions.

Instructions before each session

  • No exposure to the sun or sunbeds during the entire treatment. If the area to be treated is tanned, the treatment cannot be carried out, as the risk of burns in this case is high. If this is the case, be sure to cancel your next Epilia session. To cancel an appointment, you must inform us via our desk, or via the appointment confirmation email you received at least 48 hours before the scheduled appointment.
  • Tanning activators and self-tanning lotions are also prohibited.
  • Please inform our staff of any drug treatment.
  • The hair in the area of your laser hair removal should not be discoloured or waxed (no wax, electric hair removal epilator, tweezers, depilatory cream) in the 4 weeks before the treatment (2 weeks for the face).
  • Shaving is not recommended between sessions.
  • It is necessary to shave or trim the hair before the session so that it is short (maximum 1 mm), no shaving on facial hair for women and on downy areas.
  • The skin must be free from any cosmetic product.
  • The use of new, unwashed clothing should also be avoided if it comes in contact with the treated area.
The contraindications

Unlike a pulsed light treatment, permanent laser hair removal is safe and effective if performed by a professional and specialised team. In our Epilia centres, we have the necessary skills and a medical technical platform from the last generation to ensure you will be treated with optimal care.

Contraindications are limited but must be respected for a safe and effective laser treatment:

  • No exposure to the sun or sunbeds during the entire treatment. If the area to be treated is tanned, the treatment cannot be carried out, as the risk of burns in this case is high. If this is the case, be sure to cancel your next Epilia session. To cancel an appointment, you must inform us via our desk, or via the appointment confirmation email you received at least 48 hours before the scheduled appointment.
  • No treatment on a pregnant woman can be considered.
  • A body area affected by inflammation at an infectious stage cannot be treated.
  • Tattooed areas (or with permanent make-up) cannot be treated. The treatment can only be done around the tattooed area, which will still be hairy.
When is the best time to start a laser hair removal treatment?

Would you like to feel completely at ease and at your best next summer?
Autumn is the best season in which to start a laser hair removal treatment at Epilia, when your skin is completely unbronzed.

In autumn and winter, the schedules fill up quickly with patients wanting to restart their treatments after the summer and with people wanting to begin new treatments. We therefore recommend that you plan your free initial consultation during the less busy summer months (between May and August). You’ll have ample time to plan, together with your laser assistant, the most convenient time to start your treatment, depending on the area(s) that you wish to treat.

Good to know: armpits and the bikini line are areas that are rarely exposed to the sun. They can easily be treated all through the year, even in summer.

It is, however, not ideal to start a treatment on your legs or face (frequently exposed areas) during the summer, as you will have to pause your treatment protocol very quickly.

Is laser hair removal painful?

Depending on the areas treated and the sensitivity of each, permanent laser hair removal can be more or less unpleasant. However, the pain ensuing from the treatment is generally completely bearable. The sensation felt is similar to that of a rubber band on the skin.

To make your sessions as comfortable as possible, all our permanent laser hair removal centres are equipped with an additional machine. The latter is from the latest generation and makes the skin to cool down in the treated with an anaesthetic effect. It makes the tingling sensation caused by the laser easy to tolerate.

Is laser hair removal dangerous?

Permanent laser hair removal has been practised worldwide since 1995. Since then, many scientific studies were carried out. Today, we have sufficient hindsight to state with certainty that the laser has no impact on health. Because the laser targets the melanin, the surrounding tissues cannot be affected by the light beam. Moreover, its wavelength is very selective and does not go over the dermis.

Is laser hair removal expensive?

Laser hair removal must be considered as an investment that becomes profitable in the long term.
Conventional hair removal sessions seem less expensive but must take place regularly for many years.
Comparative studies have shown that permanent laser hair removal is, in the end, less expensive in the long term than conventional monthly hair removal sessions.
As the treatment progresses, thanks to the time necessary between the sessions, the costs will be spread.
At the end of the treatment, you will enjoy a real comfort and peace of mind, you will save time and, above all, you will get self-confidence… And that is priceless!

At what age can I start a laser treatment?

Permanent laser hair removal can be performed on minors from the age of 15, provided that one of the parents agrees and signs the consent form. The presence of the latter is also required during the first consultation (free of charge).

However, we recommend waiting for hormonal stability before starting laser treatment.

If not, then we are talking more about a comfort treatment than a definitive treatment.

Is one session sufficient?

The hair’s life cycle consists of three phases. The laser only has an impact on hairs that are in the active growth phase (anagen phase). During the resting phase (catagen phase) and the ejection of the hair (telogen phase), the hair is no longer bound to its hair follicle. The laser, therefore, does not affect these last two phases.

Since not all the hairs in the treated area are in the active phase at the same time, it is necessary to schedule several sessions to obtain an optimal result.

The number of laser hair removal sessions varies according to different factors:

  • The age
  • The sex
  • The skin phototype
  • The pigmentation and hair structure
  • The treated area

Since the physiology of each person is taken into consideration, it is impossible to accurately predict in advance the number of sessions that will be required to achieve the expected result.

Depending on the situation, but also on everyone’s expectations, it may be considered to do a yearly laser session to maintain an optimal result. However, it is not systematic.

During your first free consultation, our teams of specialists study the feasibility of the treatment and take the time to inform you about all aspects of the laser and protocol.

During this meeting, a personalised quote is drawn up and given to you in person.

Laser hair removal: are the results permanent?

The results of permanent laser hair removal are impressive and very satisfactory in most cases. This technique, although recognised as the most effective one, does not allow total hair removal. However, the remaining hair will be thinner, sparse and with no pigment.

Finally, it should be noted that laser hair removal cannot prevent the appearance of new hair bulbs linked to hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, hormonal imbalance). In these cases, sessions to maintain the results will need to be scheduled.

Can I get a laser hair removal on all body areas?

Laser hair removal can be performed on all body areas except on the periocular region (eyebrows and between the eyebrows).

Does laser hair removal work on all skin and hair types?

The Alexandrite laser is THE reference regarding hair removal for light to medium skin phototypes. For matt skin phototypes, the Nd Yag laser is more suitable.

So far, Epilia centres are only equipped with Alexandrite lasers. If your skin phototype does not allow us to give you an optimal treatment, we will refer you to another centre, more adapted to your needs.

Good to know: the laser targets the hair pigment, so it has no impact on hair with no pigment (blond vellus hair, white hair and some red hair).

During the first free consultation, a diagnosis will be made regarding the feasibility of the treatment.

Does laser hair removal work on ingrown hairs?

Permanent laser hair removal gives excellent results on areas with ingrown hairs. Indeed, as the hair is gradually destroyed, they will naturally disappear over the sessions.

Does the sun and laser work well together?

No! Tanned skin is the enemy of the laser.

At Epilia, we ask you to always come with your skin totally free of tanning.

Read this to know why.

The different types of lasers and depilation

courbe-20
Which type of device do you use?

All our Epilia centres are equipped with Alexandrite lasers from the Candela brand. Candela is currently the world leader in the field of lasers used for dermatological and aesthetic purposes. All the scientific studies that have been carried out to this date show that the Alexandrite laser is the most effective one on light to medium skin phototypes. Click here for more info.

Do you use a special machine to reduce pain?

Depending on the areas treated and the sensitivity of each, permanent laser hair removal can be more or less unpleasant. However, the pain ensuing from the treatment is generally completely bearable. The sensation felt is similar to that of a rubber band on the skin.

To make your sessions as comfortable as possible, all our permanent laser hair removal centres are equipped with an additional machine. Laser or pulsed light hair removal: which differences? Which one to choose?

Pulsed light and laser hair removal are often confused although they are two very different hair removal methods, both in terms of safety and effectiveness. The power of pulsed light is lower and it only causes the weakening of the hair follicle. For this reason, it offers an ephemeral and transient result.

On the other hand, the laser emits a more intense and selective beam of light that destroys the hair bulb and allows you to benefit from a truly permanent hair removal.

Epilia has chosen to get lasers based on the latest technology: the Alexandrite lasers of the Candela brand. This type of laser is highly efficient and guarantees your permanent hair removal is done under the best safety conditions.

The sessions

courbe-20
Is the initial consultation obligatory?

Yes, it is.The initial consultation is a prerequisite for every laser treatment at Epilia.
This consultation is free of charge and without obligation.

Why is it essential?
During this informational appointment you will learn all there is to know about laser hair removal.
The laser hair removal assistant will check whether or not all of the criteria have been met so as to ensure the efficiency of the laser treatment (skin and hair type, hair colour, age, sun exposure, …).
Therefore, we ask you to not shave the area you want to treat before your initial consultation.

You can make an appointment for your first laser hair removal session with the assistant who leads your initial consultation.

How a session takes place
  • You must wear protective glasses at each permanent hair removal session. They will be provided by our teams of specialists at the Epilia centres.
  • Just after the session, redness and slight edema may appear but will phase out very quickly.
  • Our laser practitioners will give you a moisturising cream to apply directly after the session.
  • It is better not to expose the treated area to the sun during the week following your session (unless applying a sunblock).
  • The ejection of the hair bulb takes place within 2 weeks after the session and can be helped by light scrubs.
  • Hydration of the treated area is required for 3 days after the session.
How long does a session last?

The duration of a session depends directly on the size of the areas to be treated. Do not hesitate to contact our desk to find out the estimated time of your treatment.

I forgot to shave 1-2 days before the session takes place, is it important?

Shaving is not recommended between sessions. The hair should be shaved or trimmed shortly before the session so that the hairs are a maximum of 1 mm long (no shaving on women’s face). The impact of the laser when the hair is too long is less effective. However, to shave on the same day can be accepted with no problem as it does not interfere with the laser’s action. Shaving too close makes the procedure more complex for the practitioner who lacks points of reference.

Thus, it is estimated that about 15-20% of hair is destroyed at each laser hair removal session.

Since not all the hairs in the treated area are in the active phase at the same time, it is necessary to schedule several sessions to obtain an optimal result.

The number of laser hair removal sessions varies according to different factors:

  • The age

The time to wait between two sessions

Our teams of permanent laser hair removal specialists recommend waiting for about 4 to 6 weeks between 2 hair removal sessions (depending on the area). As the sessions progress, and depending on how well the treatment is working, this period is extended. From the first session onwards, the results are clearly visible. During the treatment, the growth of the remaining hairs is slowed down and they become sparse and thinner. To comply with the protocol is essential to optimise results.

Our teams of specialists are available to answer all the questions you may have all over the process of your permanent hair removal. They advise and support you in each of your laser sessions.

Why is this so important?
The initial consultation is an information session that allows you to find out everything you need to know about laser hair removal.

It is essential that the initial consultation is carried out before commencing treatment at Epilia.
